The Wharf, a significant Washington, D.C. construction project, broke ground on March 19, 2014, with an estimated completion date for Phase 1 in 2017. The project encompasses 27 acres of land and 50 acres of water along the Washington Channel. This $2 billion project, adjacent to the National Mall, will have over 3 million square feet of building space. The project will have residential, class A office, retail and open, public spaces oriented toward the Channel.
Not only is this project one of the most significant cornerstones in urban development for the Washington D.C. area, it’s also slated to be a sustainable community including the design and execution of the master plan itself, and also the buildings. These include apartments, condos, hotel rooms, office space and retail space. Cultural and performing arts space, as well as underground parking, are also part of the plan.
All buildings will meet the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standard at the Silver level, and the community itself will be built to meet the Gold level under the LEED program. The Wharf is one of the first Washington D.C. construction projects to seek Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council and will employ a stormwater management system, along with electrical cogeneration.
The project is a cooperative development between the District of Columbia’s Anacostia Waterfront Initiative and Hoffman-Madison Waterfront. The driving concept behind it is to create a sustainable world-class community accessible to residents and visitors alike.
It will have wharves, docks, parks and promenades, along with a focus on creating a pedestrian- and pet-friendly environment. Its focus is to reestablish the city as a waterfront in an intimate, urban setting. The land plan places small lots near the water so views of the channel are accessible from the interior sections of the community.
