A new construction project at Volunteer State Community College will add a significant amount of classroom and study space at the Gallatin, Tennessee educational facility, northeast of Nashville.
Construction work has begun on the college’s new humanities building, a $35.5 million project that will produce an 80,000 square foot building, the largest on the campus, according to The Tennessean.
The humanities building, which will be situated between the existing Wood Campus Center and the Mattox Business Building, will contain a substantial amount of educational and administrative space. It’s expected to house 23 classrooms, 18 laboratories and 11 collaborative study areas. In addition, it will contain 56 offices and 20 workrooms for adjunct faculty. Outside, the building will feature an outdoor theater and courtyard.
Classroom and educational spaces inside the building will include a recording studio; art studios for printmaking, ceramics and drawing; an art gallery; computer labs; music practice rooms for choral and instrumental students; and a large multipurpose instructional area.
The building will serve the 15 campus humanities programs, which offer undergraduate majors in subjects such as English, journalism, music, philosophy, theater, foreign language and entertainment media production.
Along with the building construction, some road rework will also be done. The layout of the road leading to the campus from Nashville Pike will be revised for easier access.
The Nashville construction at Volunteer State Community College reflects a continuing trend of increases in construction spending at educational facilities and other institutions around the country. For example, in late 2014, New York City announced plans to invest more than $10 billion in educational facilities.
